“Everything is Possible with God!” (even VBS)

VBS_sky-logo[1]“Everything is possible with God!” was the theme of the Sky curriculum that Morgan Park Presbyterian Church used for Vacation Bible School (VBS) this past summer. God did make it possible for our small church to hold a successful VBS program, in part through the connectional nature of our Presbytery. Rev. Amy Pagliarella of Lake Forest Presbyterian Church generously lent us gently used VBS curriculum and decorations. The Empower Ministry Team of the Presbytery granted us funds for a summer intern to boost our summer staffing. A dedicated team of church volunteers stepped up so that we were able to serve 21 children this year, some from our church, and others from the surrounding community.

VBS picture at Morgan Park 2013While VBS takes a lot of energy and planning, the adult staff reflected on how our own faith is deepened as we teach and learn from the children. The Bible stories came alive as we experienced them afresh. It was particularly inspiring to see how open the children were to forming a community of disciples.

One boy was struggling with private grief and often pushed other children away through unkind remarks and unfriendly behavior. At first it worked- the other children avoided him. But after a few days, some of the children instead of avoiding him began responding to his acting out with kindness. They provided counsel through gentle words and one boy put his arm around him as they walked together to the next activity.

I left the week with a better understanding of what Jesus meant by “turn the other cheek” and the healing and reconciliation that are possible with God in a community of disciples.
