Chicago Hope and Wheaton Hope: 25-year Partnership

Submitted by Carol Urban, Wheaton Hope

Two churches sharing a name: Hope Presbyterian Church.

One from the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago and predominantly African- American; and one from west suburban Wheaton and predominantly white. Just thirty-seven miles apart.

Twenty-five years ago, on May 22, 1990, 8 people met at the Chicago Presbytery offices to see if there might be a future for these two churches to partner together. Our goal was to discover what similarities we had besides our name. We knew we were both people of faith who would walk together and see how the Spirit would lead us. Little did we realize that this relationship would still be alive and growing after 25 years!

Over the years we have engaged in mission programs together to relieve hunger in both communities as well as worked to provide the summer Safe Haven program for children in the Englewood neighborhood. Throughout our 25 year bond, we have shared worship, fellowship events, retreats, music fests, picnics including our annual softball game, prayers, tears and laughter together. We have supported each other as we traveled through good and also challenging times. This partnership has been an important part of both congregations and has broadened our perspective of God’s world as well as deepened our faith as we see God at work in diverse settings. We pray that we will be able to continue our partnership through many more years and continue to grow with each other as brothers and sisters in Christ.

I have visited the Hope Church in Wheaton and chatted with a few members there. This sounds like a wonderful way to grow in fellowship with members of another church.
