Introduction to Systemic Racism Workshop

Saturday, April 16, 2016
9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Location: First Presbyterian Church of Homewood
1729 Gottschalk Ave., Homewood, IL 60430

Cost: $25 per person

Scholarships available.

We will serve lunch, as well as coffee and snacks.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the idea that racism is a systemic, institutional problem of power and to create the rationale for a structural intervention to dismantle it. To address the racism present in our world, we must first learn how it was born, nurtured, and grew into the manifestations we see today. Racism is not just out there in the world and in our country, racism is also present in and impacts our neighborhoods and our congregations.

We also want to share that this workshop is being held at the request of several Presbyterian leaders who expressed an urgent desire to further build our capacity through collaboration and partnership in two ways:

1.  To deepen our understanding of racism; and
2.  To provide concrete avenues for collective action to dismantle racism within our midst.

The Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.) supports antiracism as reflected in these documents:

EVERYONE is invited to be a part of this workshop. Whether you are a pastor or in a leadership role in one of our congregations, work in partnership with Presbyterians, or you sit in a pew sometimes, please join us in this transformational work.

Please share this flyer in your communities, and include the bulletin insert on Sundays.

We would like to send a delegation from my church to this. I see the registration deadline was Jan. 11. Does anyone register that early?! I’m hoping we can still get people there; this is the first I have heard about it.

HI Leah! This is the second time we are offering this workshop in 2016. The first time was in January and had the January 11 registration deadline.

This workshop will be held on Saturday, April 16 from 9 am – 5 pm and the registration deadline is Monday, April 11. Still plenty of time to register! Actually, I will be posting the online registration link on Monday next week.

Glad you are excited and we look forward to seeing you there!
