Director of Worship & Music

First Presbyterian Church of Evanston seeks a fulltime Director of Worship & Music to plan and coordinate the Worship and Music Ministry of FPCE in the context of blended and contemporary styles of corporate worship.  Position reports directly to the Senior Pastor.




  1. In consultation with the Senior Pastor and Worship Ministry Council (WMC), implement a vision and philosophy of worship consistent with the Evangelical and Reformed tradition.
  2. Work in a collegial relationship with staff and members; attend weekly staff meetings, monthly WMC meetings, and Session meetings once or twice a year.



  1. Maintain effective communication with Choir Director, Organist, Handbell Choir Director (seasonally), Percussionist and guest musicians.
  2. Select hymns and praise songs. Selections should represent the breadth of Christian music available in style, culture, and time period.
  3. Lead praise band in weekly Sunday services and rehearsals, develop the team spiritually through spiritual activities, recruit and evaluate technical abilities, and administrate tasks related to this ministry area.
  4. Maintain and develop an organized schedule of worship and related church events including choral season, handbell choir season, etc.


  1. Maintain effective communication with Audio/Visual Coordinator regarding audio and media components for weekly Sunday services and special services, and repairs or upgrades to sound system.
  2. Communicate with Administrative Associate regarding Audio/Visual needs for special events, funerals, and weddings, as needed.

Hospitality (Ushers/Greeters)

  1. Recruit and communicate with ushers/greeters for Sunday services and for special services.
  2. Organize Hospitality Team training annually.

Departmental responsibilities include:

  1. Plan and execute all service elements in weekly and special services in the church calendar year.
  2. Supervise, assist in hiring, and conduct semi-annual reviews with Worship Ministry Assistant, Choir Director, Organist/Accompanist, Audio/Visual Coordinator, Handbell Choir Director, and Percussionist.
  3. Oversee all responsibilities related to hiring of Independent Contractors participating in worship or special events.
  4. Maintain Planning Center Services account.
  5. Oversee copyright compliance.
  6. Supervise music library maintenance.
  7. Assess condition of equipment/supplies and take steps for proper maintenance of instruments.
  8. Monitor the finances of the Worship Ministry and collaborate with WMC in creating/adjusting the annual budget.


Enhance the worship music program through:

  1. Music research and selection with the Senior Pastor, Choir Director and Organist.
  2. Special worship components (drama, dance, visuals) for Sunday morning services.
  3. Collaborate with Program Staff to create inter-generational and inter-cultural worship experiences.
  4. Additional special worship services and fellowship events in coordination with WMC and community partners, when applicable.
  5. Identify, attend, or create with others, as appropriate, seminars and conferences on worship leadership.


EDUCATION, Qualifications & Qualities:

  • A mature relationship with Jesus Christ and evidence of strong spiritual leadership ability is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Music or a related major is desired, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, relational and communication skills.
  • Ability to embrace a service of combined classical/traditional and contemporary music.
  • Experience in paid or volunteer work within a church setting is highly desirable.
  • Experience with piano/keyboard desired.
  • Ability to rehearse and lead a contemporary worship band (including vocalists) is required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suites (required); proficiency with Planning Center, ProPresenter, and Finale are highly desirable.


This is an exempt, salaried position.  Generous compensation package offered.
