Peacemaking Committee of Chicago Presbytery

Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers
for they shall be called the children of God.”
                                                                    (Matthew 5:9)

Vision Statement

“Peace is the intended order of the world, with life abundant for all God’s children.”  This is a quote from Peacemaking:  the Believer’s Calling, a document adopted by the 192nd General Assembly in 1980 after five years of preparation.  It is inspiring, challenging, and erases all doubt that we are called to be peacemakers.  Since its adoption, peacemaking committees have been established at the national, synod, and presbytery levels, as directed.  Many congregations have also established peacemaking committees.

Since humans consistently fall short of God’s intended order, we need social justice ministries.  Peacemaking is essential, since justice and peace go hand in hand.

Purpose

The stated purpose of the POC Peacemaking Mission Team is to promote God’s shalom/salaam by working for peace and justice among individuals, communities and peoples by using the presbytery’s share of the Peacemaking Offering wisely in order to make a difference in the direction of peace and justice.

Goals 2009

  1. To build the base of peacemaking leadership in congregations.
  2. To provide education for peacemaking.
  3. To advocate for the victims of violence locally and worldwide.
  4. To foster a safer environment for children from violence.
  5. To encourage churches to be advocates on behalf of peace and justice.
