Youth Leader

West suburban church seeks part-time (12 hours/week) Youth Leader for Jr. High and Sr. High youth groups. Responsibilities include providing Christian leadership to youth; developing and overseeing fellowship events throughout the year; and counseling youth when appropriate.

Candidate should have a love for Christ and for young people; a bachelor’s degree preferred; active involvement in the church community; experience in youth ministry; ability to coordinate with volunteers and parents; ability to work in a PCUSA church; Seminary courses – a plus.

Youth groups generally meet once a week during the school calendar year. Jr. High youth meet Wednesday evenings; Sr. High youth meet Sunday afternoons or evenings. Program also involves some summer activities and mission trips.

Boundary Training…

Ann Ohlrogge Johnson shared about the far ranging consequences past sexual misconduct by a church leader can have. At a recent training, the True North Response Team learned that “Clergy Killer” congregations are often secondary victims of past sexual misconduct.

Acts 16:5 training is still available: Catch Up on August 28 10 am-2 pm.

The Acts 16:5 Team performed a Reader’s Theater-style promotion for their upcoming workshop.

Mayfair Presbyterian Church is searching for a Praise Leader for their 11:30 AM Sunday Contemporary Service. They seek a person who ”feels called to contemporary worship music ministry,” who can lead services, including music and prayers, and who can accompany with an instrument.  They say they are a “small congregation in a small church where all are working hard to discern God’s plan for its future in the Mayfair neighborhood of Chicago.” The person they choose will “be comfortable minstering to and with a diverse group of varying ages, diverse backgrounds and gifts, all struggling to help renew our church.” The job will be 5-6 hours per week, not including travel time. Duties will include rehearsing with the praise team, leading Sunday service, selecting music with the praise team, and taking part in preparing PowerPoint Slides, and preparing chord sheets each week. Scott Jansen, Riverside Presbyterian Church, has “50 too many of the Presbyterian Hymnals: Hymns, Psalms and Spiritual Songs (1990) version. They are in excellent, never used condition.
We are looking to acquire 50 of the most recent Supplemental Hymnal called “Sing the Faith” (2003). We’d be happy to do a straight swap–one for one (or 50 for 50).”

1. Mary Morrison, Berwyn Presbyterian Church, writes, “We have a bunch of Presbyterian Hymnals (1990 version) and boxes of Revised Standard Version hardcover Bibles to give away!
2. The Chicago Presbytery Resource Center will have a Great Summer Give-Away at the June 16 Presbytery Assembly. Please allow some time to sort through our boxes of withdrawn materials. Right now, we have about fourteen boxes!

Musician Available

Derek Handley, the son of David and Andrea Handley the former pastor and music director, respectively, at First Presbyterian Church of Evanston, is available to play cello and guitar.

He writes: “I am a professional cellist based in Evanston and would like to throw my name in the mix when you are considering hiring musicians. 

… I still attend FPCE, playing cello in services frequently, as well as playing acoustic and bass guitar in the worship band. At any rate, thanks for your time, and I hope to hear back from you. Thank you!”
