Choir Director, First Presbyterian Church, Glen Ellyn, IL

Summary
The Choir Director brings passion, leadership, and a drive for excellence to the gathered worship experience. S/he leads and develops the Sanctuary Choir, collaborating with a variety of instrumental musicians. S/he demonstrates spiritual and emotional maturity when working with others. S/he collaborates with other staff members in music selection to create theologically deep and musically captivating worship services.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Directs Sanctuary Choir for weekly Sunday morning services.
2. Leads the mid-week choir rehearsal (Thursdays, 7 – 9 p.m.) during the choir season.
3. Provides spiritual direction and encouragement to choir.
4. Makes music selections (i.e. Introits, Anthems, Offertories, Hymns, etc.) for Classic Worship services in collaboration with the Director of Worship Ministries and pastors.
5. Creates an engaging environment for new and/or prospective choir members.
6. Works closely with worship ministry staff and musicians to create worship experiences that integrate smoothly with broader church vision and values.
7. Potential for other collaborative projects depending on ability, interest, and experience.
Time Commitment: Part-time; an average of 15 hours per week with seasonal variance
Relationships: Reports to Director of Worship Ministries. Works collaboratively with pastors and staff—particularly the Worship Ministry Coordinator, Organist and Technical Arts Director.
Qualifications
 
• A minimum of two years’ professional experience in the field of music or music education.
• Highly skilled in musicianship, particularly in choral directing.
• Demonstrates experience in choral pedagogy; skilled at coaching and developing singers with novice to professional musical experience.
• Possesses both a broad knowledge base of and passion for interconnecting music styles.
• Strong understanding of traditional worship liturgy and congregational music.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field strongly preferred.
• Ability to direct both choral and instrumental ensembles preferred.
• Skill working with children and younger musicians preferred.
• Strong keyboard skills preferred.
 
Compensation: Competitive hourly compensation commensurate with experience
