Interim Minister for Pastoral Care, Fourth Presbyterian, Chicago, IL

Due to a retirement on the staff, Fourth Presbyterian Church seeks an interim pastor to join the staff full-time on or about January 1, 2020, on a one year contract, with an option to renew, if needed and mutually agreed. The minister would be charged with sustaining the high quality of pastoral care during the period of time until a new Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care is called.

The Minister for Pastoral Care is responsible for the care of Fourth Presbyterian Church congregation and constituents, including providing one-on-one care and coordinating pastoral care efforts of Fourth Presbyterian Church staff and volunteers.

Reports to: Senior Associate Pastor for Leadership and Adult Education.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and delegate Pastoral Care: work with clergy staff to ensure that pastoral care is provided in appropriate, caring, and timely ways, in all situations that arise and when requests are made.
  • Maintain pastoral relationships particularly in moments of crisis and on-going need including hospital and home visits.
  • Work with and guide Pastoral Care Council, a standing committee of the Session, with oversight over the entire area of pastoral care.
  • Convene and coordinate the work of the Pastoral Care Team which meets monthly and includes the Parish Associate, Pastoral Residents, and the Directors of Volunteer Ministry and the Elam Davies Social Service Center and the Center for Life and Learning.
  • Maintain daily prayer list for inclusion at morning prayers and provide weekly pastoral update to Program Staff.
  • Coordinate memorial/funeral services with Events Coordinator and officiate when a pastoral relationship is not otherwise in place.
  • Manage the Pastoral Care budget and Board of Deacons budget.
  • Serve as staff support to Board of Deacons: Attend Executive Committee meetings (meets 1st Tuesday of month) and full board meetings (meets 3rd Wednesday of month).
  • Serve as staff support and counsel to Deacon Committees and subcommittees.
  • Serve as staff support to Stephen Leaders Team.
  • Supervise Parish Associate for Older Adults.
  • Participate in Sunday morning, seasonal, and special worship leadership as assigned.
  • Oversee publicity and communications concerning pastoral care including making the congregation aware of the availability of care to them.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings.
  • Participate in monthly Session meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned, including staff support for Ecclesiastical Relations Committee and Seminarian Care Committee.

Key Qualifications:

  • Ordained as a teaching elder in the PC(USA), or in a denomination that is in correspondence with the PC(USA).
  • Strong commitment to and experience in pastoral care.
  • Ability to be collaborative with colleagues, and proven skills in coordinating activities among colleagues and volunteers.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Energy, discipline and willingness to work in a complex organization requiring multiple functions– supervising, leading, discerning, and collaborating.
  • Commitment to urban ministry, and an affinity with Fourth Church’s worship and theological values.
