Worship Band Director – First Presbyterian, Evanston, IL

First Presbyterian Church of Evanston (FPCE) is a diverse worship community that seeks to follow Christ, serve Christ and grow disciples in a dynamic Lakefront community just north of Chicago IL. The Worship Band Director plans and coordinates the music shared by the Praise Band in the context of blended and contemporary styles of corporate worship and undertakes various administrative support tasks associated with the Praise Band and Sunday services.

To provide maximum flexibility, FPCE provides candidates with two options when applying for this position. Each option is intended to emphasize the importance of the role of leading both the praise band and congregation in spiritual formation and worship. Candidates should make clear which option you are applying for.

Option #1: 30 hrs/week, non-exempt position, with full benefits package. Salary: $20,000 annually, with up to an additional 2 weeks unpaid time off during June – August. All time off, other than sick time, must be pre-approved by the Director of Worship & Music. This option requires the Worship Band Director to undertake all Worship Band Director responsibilities as well as additional administrative responsibilities as provided in the description below.

Option #2: 15-18 hrs/week, non-exempt position, without benefit package. Salary: $20,000 annually, with up to an additional 2 weeks unpaid time off during June – August. All time off, other than sick time, must be pre-approved by the Director of Worship & Music. This option requires the praise band worship director to undertake all worship director responsibilities as provided in the description of responsibilities below.

This position reports directly to the Director of Worship & Music. First Presbyterian Church seeks individuals with a personal relationship with Christ to provide spiritual leadership for the congregation and Praise Band members. Responsibilities and duties of this position include the following:

RESPONSIBILITIES
Spiritual and Musical Leadership (required in both Option 1 and 2)
  • In consultation with the Director of Worship & Music (WMD) coordinate the worship music for the contemporary service and lead the choir and praise band on contemporary praise songs during both services.
  • Rehearse the praise band to prepare for worship services during weekly rehearsals during the school year, and bi-weekly during the summer months.
  • Select praise songs to fit weekly sermon themes. Selections should represent the breadth of contemporary Christian music available in style, culture, and time period.
  • Provide leadership for the spiritual development of praise band members.
  • Recruit volunteer musicians and worship leaders.
  • Evaluate and help develop technical ability of volunteer musicians, including Middle School and High School musicians.
Worship Band Specific Administrative Duties (required in both Option 1 and 2)
  • Maintain effective communication with Audio/Visual Coordinator regarding the Worship Band-specific audio and media components for weekly Sunday services.
  • Schedule Worship Band Volunteers & Independent Contractors, and uploading materials pertaining to Sunday services utilizing the Planning Center internet resource.
  • Create Worship Band-specific ProPresenter (media presentation software) playlists and new lyric slides;
  • Printing and copying materials for the Worship Band for all rehearsals, services, and special events;
  • Maintain Worship Band-specific budget and expense tracking, and process Worship Band-specific expense reimbursement requests.
  • Collaborating and communicating with Worship Band volunteers via email, phone calls, or surface mail, when necessary.
  • Maintaining an accurate directory of Worship Band volunteers and independent contractors.
  • Assist in planning and executing all service elements of the weekly contemporary service.
Administrative Duties (required in Option 1 only)
  • Maintain effective communication with Audio/Visual Coordinator regarding all audio and media components for weekly Sunday services.
  • Maintain additional budget and expense tracking, and process additional expense reimbursement requests.
  • Plan and execute all service elements of the weekly contemporary service.
  • Oversee all copyright compliance.
  • Assist with the following tasks related to the Worship Ministry (WM):
  1. Reserve rooms for all Worship band rehearsals, services, and special events.
  2. Printing and copying materials on request for all Worship rehearsals, services, and events.o Maintaining electronic and office filing system for all worship music (choral and praise song library) and other documents;
  3. Collaborating and communicating with all Worship volunteers via email, phone calls, or surface mail, when necessary;
  4. Maintaining an accurate directory of volunteers and independent contractors in all Worship & Music ministries
  5. Maintaining all Worship folders in the server;
  6. Occasionally helping to create ProPresenter(media presentation software)playlists;
  7. Setting up and coordinating schedules, and uploading materials pertaining to Sunday services through Planning Center.
  8. Assisting in other miscellaneous projects or special events with the choir director, AV coordinator, or organist
Other
  • Is the primary contact for WMD when the Director is out of town. Screens and responds to calls and emails/mail while WMD is out of town.
  • Assist with preparations for special services/events/training.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & QUALITIES: (Applies to Option 1 and 2)
  • A mature relationship with Jesus Christ and evidence of strong spiritual leadership ability is required.
  • Bachelors degree in Music or a related major is desired, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to fluently read music, as well as prepare and organize music selections is essential.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, relational and communication skills are essential.
  • Experience in paid or volunteer work within a church setting is highly desirable.
  • Experience with piano/keyboard desired.
  • Ability to rehearse and lead a contemporary worship band (including vocalists) is required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suites (required); proficiency in Planning Center, ProPresenter, and Finale are highly desirable.

  • Health PPO Insurance – Employee pays 70% of the premium for employee + family
  • Life Insurance – $25,000 employee death benefit – premiums paid 100% by the Church
  • Short/Long Term Disability – premiums 100% paid by the Church
  • 403(b) Retirement Savings Account (pre payroll taxes) – Church contributes 2.5% of annual salary and up to a match of Employee Contributions via payroll deductions up to 3% of employee’s annual salary. This is the employee’s account and is their property at termination
  • Optional Section 125 Health Flexible Savings Account (pre payroll taxes) Employee can contribute via payroll deductions up to $2,700 annually to pay for qualifying medical, dental and vision expenses not paid for by the Health Plan. Plan year ends 4/30 and any unused contributions at plan year end must be spent be requested not later than the 15th of July following the plan year-end. Any remaining unused contributions become the Church’s property.
  • Paid Time Off – 2 Personal Days, 7.5 Vacation Days (only 2 of these vacation days may be Sundays), and 3 sick days
